The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a major honors show approaches, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
