In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
