The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team could be building a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
