Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind attacks on locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
