A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using these treatments must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.
"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
