European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
